KAREN MARTIN: Lessons to learn from Savannah

"Let's put a forward spin on the runoff election for Little Rock mayor that's coming Dec. 4. We know that the capital city operates under a board of directors/city manager form of government, a combination of elected officials and an appointed manager (that would be Bruce Moore, who's held the position since 2002) along with an elected mayor whose power is mostly dependent on the approval of a majority of those city directors. To hear the candidates touting their attributes over the last few months, you'd think the office was the sole engine of progress around here. Not true. Telfair Museums in Savannah, GA

Telfair Museums was founded in 1883 and is the oldest public art museum in the South. The legacy came from one visionary Savannahian, prominent local philanthropist Mary Telfair, who left her home including its furnishings to the Georgia Historical Society with the purpose of being opened as a museum. At present, Telfair Museums is composed of three unique buildings namely the Telfair Academy and the Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters, two National Historic Landmark sites built in the early 19th century, and the contemporary Jepson Center for the Arts. These three unique buildings and three distinct collections bridge centuries of art and architecture which illustrates the continuum of art and history in Savannah.
